Compulsory Basic Training (2nd Gear In The Six Gears of Road Motorcycling)

CBT was introduced in December 1990 as part of an effort to improve the road safety of motorcyclists. The aim was to ensure that all learner riders had achieved a basic level of competence before riding unaccompanied on the road. The purpose of the mandatory training scheme was to reduce the high level of accidents involving motorcyclists, particularly young and inexperienced riders.

All learner motorcycle and learner moped riders must complete a compulsory basic training (CBT) course before riding on the road.

Only instructors certified by the Driving Vehicle Standards Agency can teach CBT at an approved training body (ATB) such as Adventure On Wheels Ltd. ATBs must have instructors who have successfully completed a two day assessment and have sites approved by DVSA for off-road training, our yard at our head office in Melrose is such a site.

Compulsory Basic Training

All the five elements of the CBT program are fully covered and more

Please  read the CBT FACT SHEET & CBT SYLLABUS (links above) before making your enquiry, this will help you tell us how long you think it will take you to complete the full course.  Please Note: Many over estimate their abilities when deciding how knowledgeable and skilled they are.

Be over 16 years of age if wishing to only use a moped or  scooter powered up to 50cc

Be over 17 years of age if wishing to ride a motorcycle powered up to 125cc

Hold a valid provisional driving licence (Category AM or P = Moped. A = Motorcycle)

 6 hours per day

Note: A minimum 3 to 4 hours road work (you are taken out on the main roads) is included within the road ride day's training

depending on your level of entry and ability to learn, you may need considerably more than you think.

Your hands on day starts with us @ 9.30am and finishes @ 4.00pm

We have two 15min breaks throughout the day with a 1/2 hr stop for lunch

1- to -1 only

Our training programs are run on a "client-centred" learning approach, you always have 100% of our attention focused on you and your course is run to your needs and speed of learning

£200 for first six hours

Any additional time required over the six hours will be charged at £40 per hour

Any additional full days (6hrs) £150


Additional arranged days (6hrs) charged at £150 per day, Bikes, clothing etc available at no extra charge for anyone without their own.
