The Glen Café at Loch of the Lowes
Weavers and Reivers (115 miles)
This is a short day tour taking in some of the Borders most scenic valleys and rivers and crossing over into Dumfries and Galloway region.
Starting from Melrose we pass through Selkirk for a fuel stop if required. From Selkirk we head west towards Moffat for a (possible) refreshment stop and leg stretch. Moffat has a fine wide main street with some interesting shops (try the Moffat Toffee) and an unusual statue of a ram, a tribute to the area’s textile and knitwear industry.
From Moffat we take a series of unclassified roads to Eskdalemuir. For those who haven’t visited on another of our half day tours, we stop at the Samye Ling Buddhist Temple for refreshments and a leg stretch.
Next we head for Hermitage Castle, a Borders’ stronghold with a violent and bloody history, we stop here for a leg stretch and a look around. Carrying on, we go to Hawick, famous for woollens, especially Cashmere.
Staying on the A7 north through Hawick (notice the imposing Reiver’s statue on the High Street) we return to Melrose.
